The NIST AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF) 1.0, published in January 2023, is the US National Institute of Standards and Technology's comprehensive voluntary framework for managing risks in artificial intelligence systems throughout their lifecycle. Structured around four core functions — GOVERN, MAP, MEASURE, MANAGE — it provides organisations with a flexible, non-prescriptive approach to identifying, assessing, and responding to AI-related risks while maximising beneficial outcomes.
The AI RMF defines seven properties of trustworthy AI that all organisations should strive for: Accountable, Explainable & Interpretable, Fair (Bias Managed), Privacy-Enhanced, Reliable, Resilient, Safe, Secure & Resilient, and Transparent. The companion AI RMF Playbook provides specific suggested actions for each function — making it one of the most implementation-ready AI governance resources available. While non-prescriptive and not certifiable like ISO 42001, it is widely adopted by US-facing Indian organisations as their AI governance language.
